Emails and letters from people
that were involved in or ran the race on March 14th, 2010!
I
am
very much looking forward to this race. I find the race
course very symbolic to the fight with cancer with its steep up
hill
battle at the start and the many bumps in the road along the way.
Then
the peaceful downhill finish.
Although
I have not personally fought cancer I will be running with the initials
of many
survivors and fighters on my bib.
This
was my first race ever and I
was so happy I finished! Very, very well organized and the volunteers
were
awesome! Us slow people missed out on the Outback food but the free
beer did us
just fine! I will definately plan on doing it again next year but will
train
for more hills next time around, lol! Great cause and overall great
race!
This
race my first race of the year. I thought it was organized extremely
well and
all the volunteers were so gracious. I didn't know what to expect from
the
course since I'm not from the area. It was challenging at times, but I
felt a
great since of pride when I finished the course. I like the windbreaker
but
would have been happy with a t-shirt if it meant I could have a
finisher
medal/pin. My only other "negative" comments about this race would be
that Outback was out of food when I went to get my free post meal.
Overall, I
would consider running this race again since it really is for a great
cause.
A
great race for a great cause.
Has a nice small town feel, without the crowds and high prices of
bigger races.
Runners, organizers, and volunteers were friendly and committed to this
important cause, which was obviously very personal to many involved.
The
post-race meal was very generous, if you're a carnivore (which I'm
not). I
could have used some more carbs, but I'm not complaining about a free
lunch.
The course was hillier than I expected from looking at the elevation
profilethis is so helpful, and not common for small races. I also loved
the
bottle of wine that came with my award. Keep up the good work!
This
race is one I will repeat. Well organized in terms of course layout,
course
monitoring and traffic control. The course also offers enough
challenges and
scenery to make it interesting. We will be back in 2011... If you are
looking
for an interesting somewhat challenging and rewarding and scenic course
this
one makes the grade.
The
perks of participating are excellent... Great cause, Great post race
activities...
I've
got to agree with everyone
else. This was a great race. It was tough on my knees, but the
difficulty was
perfect...the hills were challenging, but not extreme. Lots of
volunteers
(loved the ones keeping time at every mile), plenty of water stations,
and
happy to have a GU half way through. I will definately be back next
year - and
you absolutely can't go wrong for the price and all the great shwag!
Thanks
for a great race. This was my first half-marathon. I have been running
regularly for the last year and have run 10 or 12 shorter races. Yours
was the
best run, your volunteers were great and the course was challenging but
not
over the top. The day was great but as a guy who runs a 10 minute mile
I could
have done with out the sleet in the last mile. lol Seriously the day
was just
right. Great job and thanks.
This
was my first half marathon
and it was a great experiance. Nice course great volunteers and the
weather was
the weather. Well organized well run event. Great schwag, great food.
I'll be
back
Great
race! Probably the most well-organized race I've participated in. The
route was
fantastic - really nice views of the lakes and neighborhoods - even
though the
hills wreaked havoc on my ITBS The volunteers were outstanding, from
handing out
water, gatorade, and Gu to cheering on the runners at each mile (and
playing
music or singing), they made a tough course much easier to get through.
I'll
definitely be running this race again next year. Oh yeah, the
Outback-catered
meal after the race was just what the doctor ordered (beer was a nice
tough
too!). Thanks for a great day!
Congratulations
on a great event.
Well organized, lots of volunteers, time splits every mile, and well
spaced
water/gatorade isles. The course is rolling and picturesque, and this
year's
puddle jumping was also fun.You get a good quality windbreaker (I wore
it
during the race) and good warm food at the end. Great event to
jump-start the
running season. I'll B back!
Just
wanted to extend a big THANK
YOU to you both for another FIRST CLASS EVENT!!!!!!!!!! My friend
and I
had a terrific time and will back in 2011!!!!!!!!!
Looking forward to do the Wurtsboro Mtn 30k. Is it too late to
sign
up? Are the hills at Wurtsboro Mtn 30k MUCH CHALLENGING than at
the
CLHM? Thanks!
Great
course, very low vehicle traffic, scenic w/ manageable hills. Excellent
early
season trainer for Spring marathon training (early season weather can
be challenging).
Excellent swag and post race reception (beer). Friendly organizers and
volunteers. Well run race with good competition.
Kathleen,
Myriam –
What
can I say. Outstanding. Your endless
efforts, devotion and time to this race and, most importantly to
C.R.O.C., is
selfless and admirable. It saddens me that not everyone sees it this
way. I was
mortified when I physically heard a male race participant yelling at
Kathleen,
as she was about to start the awards, how upset he was that the food
had run
out. Amongst other things, his final rant was he is going to tell
everyone to
never ever do this race. Simultaneously, Myriam was getting the same
crap from
an angry female participant. An Outback representative then started
handing out
free dinner vouchers - WHICH THEY DID NOT HAVE TO DO! What REALLY
infuriated me
was when I learned Kathleen handed the man AND the woman $20.00 a piece
and
said, “here, get yourself something to eat” - and they took it!
People,
this is not a paid service!!! I guess
they just missed the whole point and purpose of the race! Your entry
fee went
to C.R.O.C. - cancer patients and their families. Not dinner for two at
the
Outback. You got a windbreaker jacket, not a t-shirt, a jacket. A goody
bag,
water, Gatorade, GU, Beer, music and food. Yes, the food ran out, it
happens.
This particular race isn't the first one that has ever happened to and
it won't
be the last. In this tough economy, when donations are at a low,
Outback
stepped up to the plate and DONATED all of that food.
Every
person that day VOLUNTEERED their time.
You have no idea what goes into being a race director for such a large
race.
Hours and hours of VOLUNTEERED time - no one is getting paid for any of
it.
Volunteers who were standing out in the cold rain for 4-5 hours, and
were last
to come in to the Lodge, didn't eat either, yet not one complained.
They were
there for the cause, not the food. To the man and woman who took the
money -
tisk tisk.
That
$40.00 could have put gas in a cancer
patient's car so they can get to treatment, gone towards their medical
bill or
medical equipment. Hope you enjoyed your dinner and slept well
that
night!
This
is a great race. The course
is fairly hilly...and the weather can be tough...but the organizers do
a great
job and there are plenty of volunteers. I have ran this race twice and
hope to
run it again. The staggered start times are great. Although I am slow,
I get to
finish with the pack...
No,
I did not get any food, but don't worry.I wasn't really hungrY and you had what my body needed, water
and
gatorade.I must have drank a gallon.
I
know you handed out tickets to those who did not get food.I have been last or near last at many races;
some have ran out of food but they gave us nothing. Your response was
very
classy.
I had a great run. Went out with the early runners and finished around
2:58. A
great time for me as I am coming off a few off years.
The food was very good and I waited till i got home for a beer.
Kathleen and
you run a great race and will see you next year, I hope to do some
practice
runs next year and look forward to your emails.
Congratulations
on a great event yesterday.Your race came
highly recommended and I
wasn’t the least bit disappointed.The
event is extremely well organized, the course is challenging and the
amenities
are second to none.
My
name was apparently drawn and I was awarded a
certificate for a pair of Nikes.I was
told to email my information to you.My
street shoe size is 12 and my Asics Gel 2140 running shoes are size 13.My mailing address is as follows:
Gene
Napolitano
Morris
Plains, NJ
Also,
I see in the results that I took 3rd
place in my 60-69 age group.Somehow I
missed that on the sheets that were posted on the wall and, since the
Thruway
was closed and I had no idea how to get home, I left before the award
ceremony.If possible, can you drop
whatever the award was in the mail?I
don’t want to impose and I fully understand if this is not a
possibility.
Once
again, great job yesterday! This event is
a keeper and I’ll see you next
year.
I
ran in the race yesterday for the first time;
although the weather was bad, it was a really nice course.
My
only comment would be with regards to the
food. I would recommend that only runners could get food; maybe
they get
a ticket or they have to tear off the bottom of their race number that
day. If family members would like to eat as well; maybe offer
them ahead
of time to buy a ticket. I would say all runners need to grab
their food
by a certain time and then if there are any left overs family could got
up.
Thanks
for all the information and updates. The
weather was perfect for me!I wanted to
see if there are any extra jackets.I
would love to buy one in medium if so.
Let
me know and where to send a check if available.
By
the way the race was great, well planned and a lot of fun.
Thanks
to all for making
Celebration of Life such a special day…John was very proud of his
medal..
Suggestion
next year because
this race is a winner all around…Food coupons or food wrist band for
runners…I
think it was very nice of Outback to feed so many...Thanks again..
Myriam
and Kathleen, I just want to take a moment to say Thank You.
You
both did an outstanding job. With all the weather related problems you
faced
the race took place and as I see it was a great success. I know that
you both
along with everyone else put in a lot of hours to make this happen, and
feel
you should be aware that your efforts don't go unnoticed.
We
lost a family member to cancer a few years ago and know just how hard
it is. So
I just wanted to say Thank you again for all you have done-The two of
you and
all the volunteers truly make a difference in our community.
I
just wanted to say thank you so much for today. This was my first half marathon and I really enjoyed myself. All of the volunteers were so nice and helpful.I really liked what you said before the
awards too.I just lost my dad to brain
cancer so this race was very special to me.
Congratulations to you and Kathleen on hosting a great race today.
Organization: outstanding; weather: ideal; volunteers: very helpful;
post race
food: delicious and service was very hospitable; "goodie" bag: lots
of "fun" things.
I hope to see you again next year.
Regards,
Anthony Mazza
You
know I'm happy to be
involved. I lost my mom to lung cancer on Dec. 23rd and it was
especially
meaningful for me to be there today. I'm grateful to the both of you
for all
you do. You should be proud of your accomplishments.
Cheers,
Dennis
Great
race today! Thanks for all your hard work. Will and I will be back next year!
Great
Race today Myriam and Kathleen, thanks for all you hard work. Shame on
anyone
sqawking about anything today. Today was a miracle and people need to
be
reminded to stop fussing and be thankful for all we enjoy in life. Rest
up. you
deserve it ladies! BRAVO to Sharlene who pushed me along the entire
way, you
are a woman of substance!
Thank
you. The race was great. The
volunteers were very supportive and positive despite the cold, wet,
windy
weather. I will definitely be back next year. Thank you
again.
Congratulations
on another hugely
successful race!! You gals outdid yourselves again. Thank
You!!
I
have a $100 check for you from
our training group. I meant to bring it today, but I
forgot. Please
use the money in any way you need to. Let me know who to make the
check
out to and where to mail it. I will get it in the mail this week.
Thanks
again for putting on the
BEST race, I know how much work it takes. You're both exceptional
and
very inspiring women!!
I
wanted to thank you for today's
race. It was well organized, well marked and there were lots of water
stop
volunteers. We did go away little hungry, but I understand the
difficulty
with all those non-racers in the mix. Great goodie bags!
And
thanks for holding the rain
off for a couple hours!
This was, as it was last year, the most amazingly well run
event I've
attended (and I've done 30+ races in the last 2 years). You guys really
run a
great race. And, the bonus of 100% of proceeds going to charities is
the icing
on the cake. I just wish morons that choose to complain about not being
fed

It was a wonderful event. This was my
first year running it and it was all that my friends had told me it
would be.
There was plenty of food for runners, but I think that family members
of
runners took too much of the food. It wouldn't have mattered to me if
there was
none left though. I plan to run this race again next year.

GREAT
job yesterday, I don't know who you know
but the weather was much better than I thought it was going to be.
I had
a GREAT time and if you need me, I will be happy to help out again next
year.
Thank
you so much for the opportunity to volunteer at the water station
again. The
runners are terrific. After running for 11 miles in the cold, wet (and
occassional hail) weather, the runners are so appreciative of the
volunteers
that they thank us as they go by. I think this attitude is what makes
your race
so successful. Everyone is grateful for each other's contribution to
such a
worthy cause, whether its running the race or handing out water.
The
water stop went well this year. We had five people for most of the time
and
then 3 others joined us at the peak time of 11:00 am. EJ was a great
help with
the tent and cleanup. Please keep my name on your list for next year.
I want to thank you very much for directing Celebrate Life. It was an
incredible race, and memorable for many reasons:
--challenging, accurate course, and thank you for having the weather
work out
--post race food by Outback. I'll always remember the food from the race
--friendly volunteers and good crowd cheering on the course
But mostly:
--the awards ceremony. It was very heartfelt to hear about the cause
that the
race supports and it made me happy to be a part of that. Kathleen,
please let
your sister know that her words were very inspiring!
Thank you.

I just wanted to say thank you to you and your staff for a great race.
Your
work is so very inspirational, and I will certainly spread the word

Dear
Myriam and Kathleen,
Thank you for such a well organized race. I especially liked not having
to
wonder where the turns were- the volunteers were great. I hope to
return
next year when I will be more ready for those hills (ouch.)
I also
much prefer races that have a purpose other than just running. Its a
wonderful
thing you did; be proud.

Hi
Kathleen,
I
wanted to thank you and Myriam for the really well-planned and executed
Half Marathon.
I also felt that the whole process was very inclusive, with slower
runners and
us walkers encouraged to participate and be considered an integral
part. I
remember your doubling back on that very first practise to make sure
that I and
two others didn't get lost on the first turns. I also met a lot of
friendly
people, like Phil and Marcia, Kim and John, and others.
This
was my first Half Marathon. Actually, it was my first race above 7K and
my
previous high training "walk" was about 12 miles. The practices,
friendliness and encouragement all contributed to my being really
pleased with
the process and the result. I know that Chris Cercio, who had
jointly
decided with me to do this walk after our Run with the Animals 7K
experience,
thought highly of the race.
My
wife, daughter and son-in-law were very impressed, perhaps a bit
bemused at
this role reversal from the days when I attended my daughter's swim
meetings.
My California daughter got a big kick out of Ken Shelton's "finish
line" photos. Because of the hour and a half head start, if you
look
at that sequence, it looks like I finished 2nd! Though I look a bit
overdressed
next to most of those 6 minute/mile runners.I guess I just have to buy
the
picture....how many times can I finish 13.1 miles and have a time of 1
hour 20
minutes hanging over my head? (:-)
Cheers,
Norm
Myriam,
Many
thanks to all involved for the huge
effort that makes this race a great success. It's a toss-up
what
part of this race I like best:
The
plentiful and enthusiastic volunteers...
The venue,
and almost-traffic-free course...
When this
race falls on the calendar.
And, for
anyone planning a spring marathon
this race is a great way to kick the training into high-gear.
Congratulations
on another successful CLHM:
Keep 'em coming, pleeeeez !! : )

of
thier time...FOR THE CAUSE.. nothing more...BRAVO WOMAN!!!!!!!
I
want to say...the celebrate half marathon was amazing...I run NOT for
the food, the beer, the prize, the course, I RUN THIS RACE FOR THE
GREAT AND
POWERFUL CAUSE....I do not expect things from a race when it is for
such a
amazing cause…CROC...my hats off to the two amazing race directors who
gave a
tremendous amount of
their time…FOR THE CAUSE…nothing more…BRAVO

Emails and letters from people that were involved in or ran the race on
March 8th, 2009!
I just
wanted to say thank you so much to you both and to all the volunteers
for a truly amazing race. It was my first half-marathon
and I think it was the perfect venue for my first try at a long
distance race. The volunteers were supportive and
encouraging throughout and everything was well organized and easy to
follow. On top of that, the pretty venue went a long way
to taking my focus off of my feet. Thanks again!
Lisa Dulgar-Tulloch Good
Morning,
Thank you for putting on such a wonderful race!
I wanted to give you some feedback on yesterday's race:
I have run many 1/2 marathons, but this was my 1st CLHM.Â
You really lucked out with the weather, everyone seemed to
have a great time, and the FOODÂ was
spectacular. Steak at a post-race feed is a definite FIRST
for me. Steak and Beer is almost
unbelievable. The large banquet room seemed
to fit all of us hungry runners and guests. The
windbreaker and swag bag was nice. The course
was VERY well designed, nicely scenic, very well staffed
with marshals, and mile markers were great. The
downhill finish was a treat for me as I could finally let
loose and get one of those memorable out of body kicks.
My only minor complaints were the limited pre-race bathroom facilities,
the plugged Lodge toilets after the race, water stops were perfect
in frequency, but some appeared to be understaffed and
somewhat inexperienced. Nothing else I saw
during the race was in need of improvement. The race
results were posted quickly, but without any age groupÂ
results. The website results were posted quickly, but
spelled incorrectly:Â CLELBRATE.
I will plan to return next year because you did such a nice job at
this race.
Congratulations!

1:39:08 You guys
did a great job! Congratulations! You should be very proud of what
you accomplished.
Debbie Briggs Hi,
Another well run Half Marathon. I did the early start this year since I
have not run many miles this year. Having the runners go by gave me
inspiration. Some even exchange good words. The music listeners miss
out(seems there is more and more of them). The glass of
Bud was the best tasting beer I have had in a long time!!Â
The Lodge did a great job. Hard to believe you can get so many 13.1
runners in the Sullivan Co. Thanks to you Two and the many
volunteers.
Bill Grennille Just
wanted to let you two know what a great race you had yesterday
– everything seems to go smoothly but I’m sure you had
issues but no one was the wiser if you did. The course was
great – that coming from me – too funny –
really never thought I’d do something like that – it
was awesome. Thank God for the early start – that
way I don’t feel like I’m holding up
the works and the picture says 1:55 – who’s to know
–haha – that it was really 3:25.
Anyway just a great race – great turn out – great
weather (not sure how you pulled that one off – the 3 years I
was on the course directing it was about 25 at the highest) –
hope you’re both treating yourselves to some rest today.
Take care – see you soon
Nancy Warth Myriam
THANK YOU! I appreciate your confidence in allowing me to photograph
your athletes.
You run such a fun event with everyone working well together and none
of the tension and
politics I see at a lot of other races. The reputation of your race
showed in the numbers
you posted this year.
Ken Shelton Just
wanted to tell you what an spectacular job you both did. It was
excellent. Well run, well organized. Glad I ran it
Thank you

Kathleen
& Myriam,
Once again you have put on a successful race for the running and
walking community. In doing that you have raised money for
the kind hearted organization called CROC. Thank God for
people like you, especially in these hard times when the money helps so
many local people in need. The venue, swag, food,
volunteers, photographers, finish line crew and weather all added up to
an epic day. Here's to you both in your committment to CROC & all
the athletes that support and love you. Â
Your friend,
Dennis Toscano Myriam
Big congratullations to you and
Kathleen !!
Loved the
race.
Great course, great food, great prizes and a great cause. We'll try to
get more to come next year.

Albany - Team Utopia
Thanks so
much for putting on a wonderful race today!
A few friends and i came down from
Albany to run and we were so pleasantly surprized! Not only was the
race a great value (windshirt, a buffet of great food, and for me,a
bottle of wine)--all for a great cause!
Everything went so smoothly from what I could see! Great course,
although for me very tough since we dont have many hills in Albany!
Maybe you can do something about those hills for next year! ;-)
Thanks so much again...I'll be asking all my friends to join me at this
one again next year!
Great job!!!
Chris Varley
Hi
Miriam:Â
Great run again this year! Food was delicious and overall everything
wentÂ
well. Even the weather cooperated!Â
Erika Emigh :-)
Thank you so much for a superbly
organized and thoroughly enjoyable race. You two did a
great job putting this together. The course was very well
staffed, the signage was excellent, plenty of water & G, pre- &
post-race were (from a runner's standpoint, at least) very smooth and
calm (maybe no so for you guys). I am so impressed and
appreciative of your efforts. Buy you both a drink
sometime. You deserve it.
And I'm glad the forecast models were wrong--but they weren't far
off. That storm moved just to our north where some areas
have gotten between 1-2 inches of rain, and we'll probably see the tail
end drag through tonight bringing us half to an inch of rain (it's been
raining at my house in Neversink for the past hour). It
was a great day to run.
BTW, my cousin (who I'm doing Buffalo with, first marathon for both of
us) drove down from Albany to run his first half-marathon at age 56,
and he was thrilled as well (ran 2:20, he carries a few extra pounds so
I was very impressed with that time on this course, and he was very
happy). My brother-in-law also came down from Albany and
brought a bunch of his running club partners, and I believe one of them
was the overall woman's first place. They all thought it
was a great (and challenging) course and a well-organized race.
BTW2, though of course you can't compare one road course to another,
this was a PR for me by over 5 minutes (though it was only my third
half, and the only one I've done any real training for, I ran the
others on base miles just for fun). I thought my first
half, in Geneseo last Labor Day (2:02), was a tougher course but my
brother-in-law (a 3:15ish marathoner and 1:36 today) felt this course
was harder and after racing it, as opposed to just running it, I think
I agree. So it was a great day for me as
well. Woo Hoo!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks again for a job very well done. Kathleen, good luck
in Boston this year. Myriam, I need 18 this coming
weekend--you game?
Jim Porter
Hello
Ladies,
Thanks for the well organized race. Tough course, but very
well done. I'd like also to thank the volunteers,
sponsors and other supporting agencies.
Thank you. See you next year.
Haitham Nsour
Hi Kathy
Just wanted to congratulate you on a
wonderful day.  We enjoyed every minute and
were amazed by how organized you all were, especially with the number
of people who participated.
It was a pleasure being volunteers,
everyone was so cheerful and the runners were amazing.
You worked hard and a great day was had
by all.
Thank you.
Ellen and Ed Kelly
My daughter and myself would like to
thank everyone involved in the race- what a great day to run everyone
was just great along the course--it was the 1st time for us doing a
half marathon--hopefully if all goes well we will be back next
year.  Clarinda & Shari Lain
Great job
today. Changing the course and to the Lodge worked out
great. I preferred both the course and the new
location. You both are to be commended for organizing such
a great race. I really enjoyed it and I think most others
would say the same. The folks I road up with were very
complimentary of the food. Thanks for bib #13. I
appreciated it.
Kevin Pasterchik I ran the
half yesterday.
I enjoyed the course and the volunteers were great. But
there are a few things I was disappointed in. The website
clearly shows a beige windbreaker online. When I arrived I
was handed a black windbreaker. Black could
possibly be the worst color ever for me since I have multiple pets that
shed. It was also disappointing that someone I know that signed up the
DAY OF the race received the color windbreaker advertised. I showed up
early. I wasn't the first one there, but there was plenty
of time that I got there before the race started. The fact that I
singed up well in advance and was given a non advertised
color was really upsetting. Also, 2 port o johns for 400
runners???? The organization at the beginning of the race
was some of the poorest I've seen. No one had a clue on
where the start was. When I crossed the finish line, I was
lucky enough to be bend down and get my own
water. No bananas or bagels......after running a half
marathon!?? I never saw any names at any mile markers as
advertised online as well for the random prizes.
I drove over an hour to run this, and again, while the course itself is
challenging and gorgeous, everything else was sadly
disappointing. Good luck in the future. I
won't be running this one again.

RESPONSE from Race directors;
Hi Colleen:
I am sorry to hear of your disappointment. Let me address the issues
you mentioned:
We promised 350 windbreakers. However, as the registration numbers
surpassed the 400 number mark in the last week before the
race, we decided to purchase more having to pay a higher
price and overnight shipping cost. The only color
available was black. If you would like to return your black
windbreaker, we will gladly send you a small khaki. Since they are
roomy, small might work better for you.
Inside the Lodge there were 4 toilets for women, 4 for men and 2
port-a-potties outside for a total of 10 toilets plus one port-a-potty
on the course. However, next year we will provide
additional port-a-potties outside.
I am sorry you didn't see the food inside the Lodge where
the awards were presented. This is a list of what was available to all
runners including the ones who finished last:
Coffee - Tea - Hot Chocolate - 200 pounds of bananas - 500 sliced
bagels (peanut butter, cream cheese, butter, jelly) - All of the above
available before and after the race.
As for a hot meal we had:
Chicken - Steak - Wild rice - Dinner wheat rolls - All of the above
donated by the Outback Steak House
In addition we had:
Ziti - Sausage - Pizza - Beer was also available donated by Michelob
Ultra.
There was food leftover even after the last runner
finished. All the hot food was served starting at noon and
not finished until the last person ate. All mile markers
had a prize winner. 11 of them were collected by the winners and 2 will
be mailed since it is not necessary to be present to win.Â
We thank you for your observations on the start line and we will make
sure that we will provide proper signage and directions to the start
line for next year.
If you would like to return your black windbraker, please mail it to:
27 Brewster Drive
Middletown NY 10940
We hope that you will consider joining us again next year.

RESPONSE from Colleen;
Thank you for the quick response.
I would love to be able to send back the black one for a beige
one. I always say......will run for swag, and the beige
was very nice online and it looked great on the volunteers I saw
wearing them. Thank you. Bummer I didn't see the food
inside. My own fault for not going in.Â
However, I also didn't see anything directing runners in.Â
But that could be my own mishap. I happened to see banana
peels and was thinking I lucked out on the food.Â
Again, the course was fantastic as were the volunteers. I
appreciate your response and offer to exchange the
windbreaker. I will send the black one back tomorrow in
exchange for a small beige one.Â
Colleen
Just wanted to say you did an
excellent job as usual. The food and place was excellent
you selected  this year.
PSÂ I love the
windbreaker..nice color too
Great Job
Lee DeBerry (Walker) Hi race
ladies!Â
We had a great time today.Â
My husband loved his first 1/2 marathon.
All in all, it was a very
well-organized race. The course was beautiful, and,
thankfully, the weather was perfect. The food at the end
looked great as well. Unfortunately, my husband has a
plane to catch this evening and we had to leave right after we were
finished running/walking.
Â
My only (hopefully constructive)
criticism would be the lack of medals. As you recall, I
emailed you a few weeks ago inquiring about medals since it was my
husband's first half. Since there were none, I ended up
ordering one to present to him myself at the finish. As I
was waiting for him with medal in hand, another runner asked where I
got the medal. When I said I'd bought it, he asked where
they were for sale - that he wanted to buy one. I finally
explained that I'd ordered it online, etc., etc. This man
was quite disappointed!Â
Â
As someone who has done many races, I
must say that I do enjoy getting that medal at the end.Â
Nothing beats the bling after a long race! And, since the
cost for this race is so inexpensive (really only a few dollars more
than most 5Ks), perhaps you could up the price to cover a medal -- even
add a few extra bucks to go towards CROC!Â
Â
We had a great
day. Thanks again.Â
Jackie and Dan Gulino
Hello Myriam,
I really enjoyed running in this ½ marathon.Â
This was my 18th state, I am trying to run a half marathon in 25 states.
Thank you again for organizing this race, it was challenging but worth
the flight out to New York to run it.
Kim Groshek
thanks for
the race and helping us get a ride
Best, Wendy
Have you recovered yet? Â Awesome job yesterday...thanks
for letting me be a part of it!
Valerie A. Kilcoin
Hi Myriam,
Thank you for a great time yesterday. Do you have a list
of Sportsplex members who joined the gym challenge? Do you know which
gym won?
See you next year!
Mary
Hi Myriam,
Just wanted to say that I had a blast
on Sunday! That was my first half marathon-Hope I didn't get spoiled!
Hope it was a great success.

Myriam
-Â
The race was great! Â You
& Kathleen did such an amazing job. Â Everything - from
the e-mailed letter reminder confirming w/ the runner, the babysitting
available, the venue for registration/food/awards, the course, the
support, very-visible-mile markers, the food (steak!!!), beer (I only
got to have a sip before the boys pulled me out) - was so phenomenally
well thought & organized. Â And the jackets are
absolutely
beautiful!!!   Â
Â
I felt like I was not running a local
race but a national marathon! I was so impressed. Really amazing!!!
Also - that thing you did with the weather - I loved it.
I know it took tons of time and effort on your part and Kathleen's, -
it really showed & it is so impressive what you two accomplished.
 Â
Congratulations again!!!!!!!!!
Marie Dusault
My
congratulations on a great event. It was the best running event I
haveÂ
been to in years, maybe the best ever. Everything was great. You should
bothÂ
be proud! I look forward to next year.Â
Brian Rivenburgh
Ladies,Â
there is a new monster in Sullivan County.Â
I am impressed beyond words.Â
Looking at the hometown profiles of these folks, I get the sense that
this is the first "local" race(well, maybe the Classic 10K,too) with
such an impressive array of runners from distant hometowns.Â
Did you get parking for them all, and how about the awards
ceremony?Â
Cliff Davis
Myriam-
Kathleen-
GREAT EVENT!
You both did a phenomenal job! Well organized (not that
I would expect anything less from the two of you. J)
Perfect weather. Great course. Glad I could be
involved. Â Of course- you raised the bar for me once again!
Suzy Rhulen-Loughlin
Ladies,
Thanks to you for all your hard work, it was a great
event.Â
Alex
"Great job
as race director for the Celebrate Life 1/2 Marathon. It
was an awesome day and a great turnout...congratulations on a well-run
race!"
Jackie McBride Gaillard
Hi Myriam,
I just wanted to say Great Race, Great Volunteer Support (race course
water stops and road marshals)Â and Great Food and
Refreshments following the race.
I look forward to running it again next year. (This was
the second time I ran the race; also ran it in 2007)
I wish you and your support personnel continued success in future years.
With best regards,
Anthony Mazza Hey
Everyone! Let me be the first to say on our Yahoo Group what a huge
success the Half Marathon was yesterday. Myriam and Kathleen did an
outstanding job - taking on twice as many participants as last year,
having a change in venue, etc. - a lot of hard work and I'm sure
obstacles to tackle. But they did it. I, personally, had a blast. I
will be repeating myself to some of you who I've already spoken to or
e-mailed but I couldn't think of a more perfect way to spend a morning
than with a fantastic(and yes, grueling at times)run on a beautiful
course, perfect weather, good food, GREAT friends, and all for a
worthwhile cause. I am really looking forward to this one in 2010!
Besides, I have a re-match with Pam "Bling-Bling" Henning - she got me
by 36 seconds!! Kim Klemen Hi
Kathleen,
Just wanted to tell you we had a GREAT time out on the course at the
race on Sunday. The race went so well, and it was so unbelievably well
organized. (I told Steve H. that I wanted you to come over
and organize my house!)Â Hope you saved yourself an extra
bottle of wine for post-race celebrating. Great job by you
and Miriam.(Oh, and thanks for the great windbreakers too.)
Patty Insignaris Kathleen --
Thanks for letting me help out yesterday. Please consider me for next
year -- I will do better and try not to lose my map. You and your team
did a GREAT job putting the run together. I have never tried anything
of that size, but it was real impressive and I am sure not easy. GREAT
JOB. and thanks again.
Bill Myriam and
Kathleen:
Congratulations for pulling off what many thought was going to be a
monumental feat. Once again you have shown that you can put these
things together when others have failed. Next year...who knows! Maybe
1,000?????
Great job.
John Flynn Myriam- I
wanted to commend you, your volunteers, and the community on a fun race
on a beautiful day.
This is the 2nd year in a row I have come down from Albany to run the
race. Last year, there were 5 of us; this year 10 of
us.Â
I am planning on writing an article for our Albany running club(HMRRC)
monthly magazine(the PaceSetter) to promote this quality race and its
charity. I belong on a team(Utopia- we had gold/black
singlets) w/ 50-60 members and HMRRC has over 2000.
I hope to bring down a big contingency next year. You must
be thrilled w/ the 500+ turnout.
The Lodge was a great facility.
Thanks--- Jon Rocco Myriam and
Kathleen - WOW! What is there to say but, "THANK YOU"
This was my very first 1/2 marathon and everything was amazing (all
those hills make me truly appreciate flat ground...lol) and I made it!
The people, the organization, the course and the food. At the end, a
few hundred yards before the finish was a tall, slender black man and
made the whole race for me. He saw me and began running backwards along
side me so he could see my face/and kept repeating to me "go, go, just
relax your upper body, lengthen your stride". Not only did he make me
smile but, he pushed my pace to 5:27 - what a great way to finish.
Please tell him "thank you" as it meant so much. I will always remember
him and this race. Thank you again and I can't wait until next year's
race.
Hi Myriam
& Kathleen...
I want to thank you for all that you've done to put on this terrific
race for a wonderful cause. I was so happy to be a part of
this event. It was so well-organized, with a beautiful
& challenging course... thanks for a memorable time!
*Julia Doherty* Hi
–
Great race, really enjoyed it. Volunteers were super, and
race well organized. Â AND really loved the hot food
post-race (esp since I ran total of 21mi)Â One small
suggestion: bigger cups? I found myself taking 3 cups per
station, might save money / resources going with larger cups (small
cups and only half-full wasn’t really enough).
 Just a suggestion.
Overall, had a great time, and returning next year!
Great job.
:-) Keep up the good work. It was a very special day.Â
Robert Armagno
Dear
Myriam & Kathleen,
I wanted to take this time out to tell you how grateful I am to be a
part of something great that you guys worked so hard all year long to
do. The entire organization of the race from beginning to end was
priceless to say the least. I enjoyed not only running it but the
festivities afterwards was definitely one for the books in my
opinion. There was a lot of room forÂ
everyone. The day was beautiful. It was definitely more than what I
expected. I looked around before the start of the race and
couldn’t remember when the last time I ran with so many people
for the 1/2 ever. The excitement was in air and all around me with so
many runners anticipating kickoff. Im sure everyone had fun and fought
to the end on a beautiful and
challenging course. You guys did so much to make sure everything went
off without a hitch. And that you did! GREAT JOB GUYS AND
THANK YOU!
Sincerely,
Nancy Figueroa Hi,
Â
I just want to know how you both do it,
the 1/2 Marathon has gotten better every year, from year one on it has
been a new experience, and I think for the last 6 years we have had a
different climate everytime but that adds to the race.Â
This year you have over 500 runners, time to start thinking capping the
number of entrants just in case and maybe getting a committee to help
with all of the planning and everything else that must be done to keep
the race a success. I think as of last Sunday we have
another premier race in the Hudson Valley. Good job and
congratulations.
Â
Joe Marchesano just
wanted to say this was my first half marathon and I enjoyed the run.
Very well organized and very challenging. I had a blast now I know what
to expect for the next one. Hope to be there next year. Thanks again
abayomi Dear
Kathleen:
Ran half the race with your running buddy, Carolyn (my new friend), and
enjoyed the fellowship with her (would have enjoyed running the entire
race with her, but she is way too fast for me!).
Congratulations on a wonderful event. It was especially
meaningful for me to have my son find it on the internet, and for him
to have the desire to participate (without any prodding from me), and
have a friend of my wife’s decide to join us,
making a great weekend for us all.Â
What a fantastic event and what great, upbeat helpful volunteers that
supported us all the way!
Thank you for what you, and your co-director Myriam do. It
benefits the entire world, with its
positivity……congratulations on a job well
done!
Sincerely
John Warner,
(60 year old recreational runner from Cornwall, Ontario, Canada)
P.S. – We believe that we are the first Canadians to run in the
race, will tell all the runners about it, in our community, have
already told our running friends in Northern New York State, and would
not be surprised to see you on their website for a destination in 2010. Dear
Myriam and Kathleen:
I have just returned from a 2 week trip to Vancouver, BC to start up a
piece of equipment we supplied for a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle
refueling station. Thank goodness for the internet; I
could witness your overwhelming success with the Celebrate Life Half
Marathon shortly after it happened! (I wish I could have
helped out.)
You two have done a marvelous job creating and growing a phenomenal
success story. CROC is a great beneficiary and must be
very proud of its association with your race. The few
runners I’ve talked with loved the Lodge and did not complain
about (but they mentioned) the early hill in the new
course.Â
We members of the ORC and SS are so lucky to have the talents and
energies of both of you for all you do for us and others in our little
running community.
THANK YOU!
-Dave D. Thank you
for the wonderful race. I was a walker and yesterday had
the pleasant surprise of receiving a medal in the mail. I
could not believe I came in first for my age group. Women
over 70. I hope I was not the only woman over
70. I had a wonderful time. It was my first
race but I hope not my last. Everything was done
well. The food, water, signs, encouragement from
everyone. Thanks. Good job done.Â
And I hope we made lots of money for the cause, wasn't that the reason
for being there. Barbara Winans GREAT
RACE! Thanks for putting it on, coming back next year. -
Don
Thank you
for mailing me my first “old man across the finish
line medal. This year was a beautiful race and
your continued attention has everyone coming back. I
don’t know of a race where the mile markers are so clearly
marked and you had guys shouting out the times.Â
Super! What a huge help for us Boston bound runners who
are watching our calories and the seconds.
See you next year,
Jeff Lease
First we
would like to thank you for organizing such a fantastic half marathon
last weekend. We truly had a wonderful time and we were
touched by the nature of the event and the atmosphere of the
day. We could tell how hard both of you worked to make the
day special and how passionate you are about the event.Â
Please keep doing what you do because you do it beautifully and we were
honored to be a part of the day. Many thanks also for the
lovely bottle of wine, it was great after running up all those hills!
Here’s to celebrating life in all we do.Â
Best Wishes,
Lynn Bradley & Rich Bakst

Emails and letters from people
that were involved in or ran the race on March 2th, 2008
Hi & congratulations on a great
job Sunday (I know that race day is the end of the road -
most of the work was during the months before). I thought
everything went really well, very organized and I'm pleased you got us
some nice sunny weather! Much better than some of those
training runs, especially that one with the icy roads!!! I
had a slow run compared to last year, but enjoyed it, and as you can
see if you look at the photos, the two neon yellow jackets pretty much
ran it together, which was fun. I thought Dr.
Eanelli made some very eloquent remarks, and the fact that
the race got a record number of participants (from far away!), is
significant - you're not just a little local race anymore. Anyway, I'm
not such a good photographer, but I did get a few photos which I am
sending (maybe in a couple of e-mails). Maybe you can use
them on the race website, or our club websites. Hopefully
there are other pictures coming too. Have a great day
& thanks for a great race. Carolyn Negrycz
Myriam,
Congratulations to you and Kathleen,
you do an outstanding job putting the race together. This
race means alot to me and that is why I always show up
regardless of how I feel (physically). When you asked me
to say something, I always feel like I will choke with a
nut in my throat and get teary eyed. This race really means to me "to
Celebrate another year being alive." As far as I am concerned I am
living bonus time, so I make the best of it, living my life to the
fullest with no regrets. Lily Kroner
What a great day. You did a wonderful
job--an amazingly well organized and supported race, and
for such a good cause. We all had a wonderful time and I
think we'll be able to spread the word and get even more
people next time. I felt so glad to be part of it--even
if I didn't run my best race (it's a tough course!!). I ran
almost the whole race with Margie, a woman from
Chester, who ran my pace, and we chatted and helped push
each other along--it's so great to find that kind of
support on a course (plus she'd run it a few times
and could warn me about the hills coming
up!!).  You should be so proud of what you
have accomplished by putting on a race like this.....I also
know how much work it is.... Bette Clark
This half was another great outing. The volunteers were good and
enthusiastic even at my pace  The turnout was
fantastic and it is hard to believe all that show up on a early March
day.   Bill Grennille
I want to commend you and all the other
volunteers for an excellent job done. Without all those
volunteers, none of what happened yesterday could take
place. Thank You. Next year I'm going to try
and get my husband involved by having him volunteer. (Ha,
at east that's my goal). Lee DeBerry
Thank You for organizing a wonderful
race. I'm so glad I participated, even though I'm a bit
sore today.  There is nothing like a day in the
Mountains taking in the beauty of nature to clear your head and help
get focused. Congratulations on what you have given back
to others - Well Done! Thanks again for
encouraging me to participate:)Â Â Melissa
McCarey
Thank you for your work on behalf of CROC. Bob Augello
(Course Marshall Volunteer)
Myriam/Kathleen,
I wanted to let the both of you know what a tremendous job
you did with the race this year. All the planning, the
practice runs and race day activities, I don't know how you do it. It's
one of the best run races in the area and the most
enjoyable. I'm sure the race was a huge
success. Thanks. Jim Clancy
Thanks for the opportunity to volunteer at the race today.Â
Great race as usual, congrats! (I look forward to running it again next
year.)
Bill Braine
I really
enjoyed myself today. I thank you and everyone for all your hard work
making this race possible. My Dad has liver cancer, so I
did this race for him and all who are sick. God bless you and take
care. Bob Harjes Wow, I do
have a different perspective after being there and walking the whole 13
miles. I had done the NJ Shore marathon for croc a few years ago and
that was a challenge but nothing like this! For one thing,
the distance and then the rolling hills. What a pretty walk though,
especially near the lake with the water fall. It was good
to be mixed among the runners and getting encouragement from them
saying " good job number 6!"Â I often wondered how runners
do what they do, and still don't get it but I think I understand a
little more about the constant mind game that is involved. I doubt that
I will ever fully understand just what a runner does and how they keep
it together. Running and walking are two very different
things. I started to think about compromising my 13 mile goal about the
8th mile. I got thinking if I can just make it to 10. Then that
horrible loop where you switch back and face other runners.
Agh!!!!!!!!!!! It was no sense turning around cause it wouldn't have
been any shorter.  It was a great day and a
wonderful experience. It felt good knowing I got through with lots of
encouragement and good vibes. Thanks for another successful and
wonderful event. Hugs, Mary Andreozzi (previous water stop
volunteer and first time walker!) wow, this
race is comparable.. maybe even MORE organized than a nyrr race!!
kudos!! Tamar Dear
Kathleen & Myriam,
You guys have outdone yourselves once again. It just seems that year
after year this race gets better and better. The organization and work
that went into this is a huge undertaking. You both do it
selflessly. From the minute you start contacting generous sponsors to
early mornings getting water/gatorade on the course for the training
runs to all the buying of those great shirts, water, supplies, great
food and so much more. This community and CROC is lucky to
have you. One more thing I would like to add. When the survivors come
up and speak to me, they aren't the only ones who get choked up. -
Dennis T. You and
Kathleen keep getting better each year. Always new ideas
and a terrific Web site. Richard Robillard I love to
run. I love to run for a cause. CROC is a great cause and Celebrate
Life is a challenging half-marathon which make you think of the
challenge that people afflicted with cancer must face. That makes the
hills seem......well, easier? The volunteers were great and
porta-potties on the course! What more could you ask for? A fantastic
goodie bag, long sleeve tech shirt, post race buffet, warm comfortable
place for award ceremony, friendly race directors....the list goes on.
You could tell a lot of work went into the race. If you run fast enough
and don't whine about the hills you might just win a bottle of wine
along with your medal. Thank you for the race. I hope to
be back next year and "beat the hills."Â I thought it was
really neat to receive the e-mail after pre-registration.
The welcome and all the information. Just like the "big
marathons."Â Â Harland Bigelow Hi Myriam,
Thank you again for the hat! The color was a great
choice. Thanks again for another great run! I
already can't wait for next year!
Heather Caswell Hi Myriam
had and great time you and Kathleen put on a very nice run ! the people
on the course who helped all of us along are great also, with out them
standing in the wind cold air helping water gatorade etc would not be
much fun.you take care and thanks for a nice Sun AM run up in RockHill.
Doug Bartocci Middletown NY. Myriam and
Kathleen,
Thank you for a wonderful day! As a walker and a first time
½ marathoner, I greatly appreciated the encouragement
from the runners and the early start for the walkers. Having this event
as a goal helped me to stay motivated this winter. I ran for my mother
who died of ovarian cancer and for my friend whose birthday was on
Sunday. Keep up the great work! Ellen Todd
Hi, I ran the Celebrate Life half marathon last
week. I just wanted to thank-you for having such a nice
event. It was well run and I had a great time. Bill
Winterbottom I LOVE
this race - no matter the weather! (even though it would have been nice
to run it about 20 degrees warmer and no wind).Â
Benita Hi..today
my beautiful walker medal came in the mail, how very nice to send it to
me. The Celebration of Life is such a special
day. John and so many others who are cancer survivors make
us all so proud and grateful for our lives each and every
day. Many, many thanks for to the both of you for all you
do and thanks to all the others.
Regards, Ann Singer Hi Myriam,
Good race, good people, good food, for a Great cause.Â
Sorry for the loss of one of your local runners. Keep up the great
work. See you next year.

Emails and letters from people
that were involved in or ran the race on March 4th, 2007
Greetings
Myriam and Kathleen
Thank you so much for the amazing hospitality you and everyone else
offered Rachael and I. This will probably rate as one of my favourite
races of all time and I have done some amazing races(comrades, two
oceans, to name a couple). The atmosphere was FANTASTIC and leaving
when we did was hard and I drove off wishing I had kept the hire car
for another few hours so I could talk to more and more people.
Please pass on my regards and thank you to all the marshalls and
organisers of your race. We hope to come back again and put in an even
better performance and spend even more time chatting to people.
My regards
Mark Shepherd
Ps. We finished our trip by joining the Central Park Track Team for
intervals at the Armoury on the Tuesday evening. Another amazing
evening in a great trip to the New York area.
From the race directors:
We want to thank you for
participating in the 4th annual Celebrate Life Half Marathon. Although
the day was brutally cold, 295 of you registered to run it or walk
it!!! We thank each and every one of you and we hope that
you will mark your calendar and save the date to participate in
2008.Take a look at our website www.celebratelifehalfmarathon.com
for results and pictures There are great shots of runners on mile 4 and
at the finish line courtesy of Ken Shelton. If you find a picture you
like, please support Ken by buying it.On behalf of
Celebrate Life, we thank you for making our race special.

Myriam Loor and Kathleen Rifkin
Race Directors.
Myriam,
 Mark and I would
just like to say thank you so much for organising such a fantastic race
today. We had a great time and I can honestly say it was the most
enjoyable event I've ever participated in! (even though it was the
hardest half marathon I've ever run! Us soft brits aren't used to such
snow and hills!)
 The prizes were also
extremely generous, so thank you very much for those. Hopefully we will
try and make it back!
 Thanks again,
 Rachael
Thanks for all your effort to
pull off a great run. Its good when a plan comes together and you did
such a good job with the weather you ordered
!!  (hahaha) It really was a job well done, you
hard work didn't go without notice.
 ThanksÂ
Ed O'Connell
Hi Myriam,Â
I thought the race went very
well.....at least it did from my spot on the road. See you
soon........Doris Motl
Hi Myriam and Kathleen, Â
Thanks for all your hard work and putting on a great race!Â
- Andrea Phelen
Kathleen and Myriam
GREAT job again!! Thank you both for all your time
and effort put into prep for this race. It
seems to be growing in popularity with runners each year
and that says much for you both. I'm glad to be a part of it as a
volunteer and the other volunteers feel the same. They are always
so happy to help and do what they can.
Stay well.
Sue Miller, CROC
Congratulations on a well
organized race!
 I was very impressed
with the volunteers on the course and the enthusiasm they showed,
especially since it was cold and windy on the
course. Seeing their enthusiasm helped me. As
runners we're constantly moving, for the volunteers that's not the case.
All other details of the race
seemed to go flawless.
Thanks for a great race!
Kevin Pasterchik
Thanks. You guys put
on another great race - you must be really
pleased!!  Do something about that wind next
year, would ya!
 - Marie DuSalt
Myriam,
I wanted to let you know again
what a great job I thought both you and Kathleen did on the race
today. As usual the race was very well done, so
organized! The course was great, the t-shirts, awards,
post race food, the company, everything was excellent. I
am not suprised that you had the best turnout for the race yet, when
people hear about a good race, they want to try it, and once they
discover for themselves they keep coming back. The runners
in the Orange/Sullivan area really appreciate all that the both of you
do in putting on such a tremendous race for
us!! Â
Looking forward to next years
race.
Andy Latinsics
Hello Race Directors,
I just wanted to take this time
to congratulate you two on a great race and honorable
endeavour. It almost brought me to tears when I saw the
people that were actively fighting cancer, or survivors as in Myriams
case. Keep up the good work and know that I am always at
your disposal for anything you may need. God bless.
Dennis Toscano
Kathleen-
I had a GREAT time this morning at the 1/2 marathon and I would like to
volunteer again for next year. Would you be able to place me in the
same spots again? It was inspiring seeing all those people
out there running. I went home and did 7.3 miles as a result. Keep up
the good work.
Bill Gaa, Mile Timer (2 & 8)
What a great race this year!
I know that you both are tired, and have wrap up work to do, but hope
you still feel the joy of success. Thank you for all your
time and efforts to keep such a high-quality race so warm and welcoming
for participants and volunteers! I had the 'luxury' of
sitting back a little at the restaurant to just observe
everyone. Could you feel the ENERGY? -- the cold weather,
good hot food, great prizes and recognition all contribute to this
special feeling, I know -- but I just think there is a "special unity"
with this race vs. others. What a great tradition you all
have started! BRAVO! luv ya!
Carrie Lindsay, CROC
Hi Myriam,
The day was great, you guys did an amazng job..I was reviewing those
photos, a lot of hammy runners, smiling for the camera!
Everyone seemed to have a really good time.. I wish someone got a photo
at mile 10 of this herd of deer sprinting past the runners, it was
hysterical..
Thanks. Good luck today - Tamar
Positives:
1) The contributions from the race would go to people that suffer from
the disease of cancer. My mother in law passed away from breast cancer.
I never had someone pass away that I was very close with. She was my
inspiration for me to start doing half and full marathons. I felt good
that I was helping people
2) This was the first race that I ran with a family member. We stayed
together the whole race and it was great.
3) I never been up to that part of New York and the scenery was
great.It was a great training.
Negatives:
1) I have been part of alot races, I can honestly say that this is one
of the most disorganized races I have ever took part in. The one thing
I am looking for when I finish a race especially after a half marathon
is a bottle water. I know it took my cousin and I a little longer to
finish the race, but there should of been water waiting at
the finish line. The water was all gone and I had to head to the bar
area to get a cup of water. I never came across this issue
since I started doing road races.
2) The water was a big complaint due to hydration, but the there was no
food left either. The only food that was left was rolls and
peanut-butter. I don't know who did the planning to order the food, but
it wasn't enough. Instead of doing all the door prizes, you should of
directed that money for more water and food. A door prize can not
hydrate and feed you when you just finish a race. I noticed on the back
of the T-shirt that there were alot of sponsors. There should of been
enough of water and food.
3) Port a Johns were a big issue because there was none. I don't know
how u expect 300 runners to use 2 bathrooms. The men's room toilet was
all clogged up. It was very disgusting. There were probably people that
really could of used those porta johns, but had to hold back the urge
for 13.1 miles.
4) When we are trying to run and cars are zooming by you, it really
hard to feel safe. There were several occasions during the races that
cars came awfully close and they weren't going slow. I guess no one
told the town that the race was being conducted. It was very unsafe
running out there.
5) I traveled 2 1/2 hours to be part of the race and the only upside of
the race was running with my cousin and helping cancer patients out.
The rest of the race aspect was totally disorganized and at times very
unsafe.
This insight from one of the runners will help you and your other race
directors figure out what areas need more attention and to make sure
that the runners have a great experience running for a cause.
Dolphuss Addison
Race Director's response:
Thank you for your comments and I am sorry your experience was so
negative. I am surprised you didn't see the porta johns, there were 4
outside plus the two bathrooms inside. There was enough chili, as the
restaurant owner said, to feed the country of Mexico. When the race was
over, trays of chili were given away....the pizzas were probably gone
when you finished but I do remember that runners who finished in 2:28
still got a chance at it. There were 300 individual bottles of water at
the finish line. Next year we'll make a point of having gallons in
addition to the individual bottles so that we dont miss anyone. Again,
very sorry that your experience was negative.
Regards,
Myriam
In regards to the Porta John's - Dolphuss was referring to along the
course of the race. This was actually a problem for me -
as before mile 4 I finally needed to go and there was nothing I could
do but hold it until the end of the race.... I am not as experienced as
my cousin with these races, but I did do the one in Hartford in October
last year and there were a number of Porta John's along the race course
- instead of putting 4 outside the restaurant/start/finish line maybe
put 2 there and then one @ mile 4 & mile 8. Just a
suggestion.
Thanks,
Maureen Hanrahan
Race Director's response:
We will consider your suggestion. Did you do the marathon
in Hartford? Being twice the distance, porta potties on a marathon
course are a must, of course. In a largely populated half
(or a half combined with a marathon), I could also see the
demand. We have a small race but would consider adding
some on the course if we grow. We do have a few spots on
the course where the runners pass 2 or more times, perhaps a porta
potty could be added at one of those. The ideal spot would
be mile 1.5, 8.25 and 11.5 (approximate) where the runners pass 3
times. There is also the entrance to Wolf Lake which is
mile 3 and 7 (approximate) where the runners pass by twice. Most of the
items we get for our race are donated because of the great cause,
including all food and door prizes. Unfortunately, of
course, we do have some expenses, and porta potties are one of
them. We do feel that 4 are needed at the start area so
adding one or 2 is an additional expense. So we need to
consider the expense as well as taking your suggestion to make a better
race for the runners.
Thanks for your suggestions and comments.
Kathleen
You don't have to thank us. I think all the
runners THANK YOU, you really did a very good job, as always.
Everything was in place, the food delicious, the awards great. And
thank you all the volunteers because with the brutally cold weather, as
you said, they were there, giving us water and cheering us all the way.
JOB WELL DONE! Gladys Nieves
I enjoyed your run very much. Runners always appreciate a
well-marked, scenic course with splits at every mile and plenty of
water. Very well done. Some tough hills for sure, especially that
devilish 11th mile.
Thanks again.

Hi ladies,
        Â
I just wanted to congratulate the two of you on another successful
Celebrate Life Half-Marathon. You and I know it takes many people to
pull it off, but the two of you are the heart and soul of the event. I
was so glad to see that there was a record number of participants.
BRAVO!!! The both of you do so much for the running community and I
want to thank you personally. Merci beaucoup.
Appreciatively,

Hi and thank you to you also you have a great race for a
great cause I had a lot of fun! - Doug
Hi Myriam,
I have viewed your race site as I had friends who did this race this
past weekend. Everyone had a great time. I am
writing over something that may seem silly and not necessary, but if I
don’t write to you about it, how can I ever hope to see a
change? I and many of my female running partners are
constantly disheartened by the race coverage and photos that typically
follow such an event as yours. Typically what we see is a
picture of the male marathon winner with the caption “Overall
marathon winner. As I understand it, there are
actually two races going on race day.  I
believe there was also a female “overall marathon
winner as well? Why then, is there not two photos of the
overall marathon winners? The fellow pictured did win the
overall marathon… for the men. Where is the
overall marathon photo of the talented woman? I am not
trying to be combative, as I realize when an e-mail is sent that
sometimes the feeling get mis-constued and that is not my
intent. I do hope you understand my/our feelings
concerning this issue. And I do hope to see a change in
the future of sports coverage. Thank you for your time, I
greatly appreciate it.Â

Myriam,
What a beautiful day yesterday and a really fun race.
The course was rather challenging but I finished and that's all the
really matters. (much slower than I wanted but it's incentive to do
better next time)
I wanted to say "thank you" to you and everyone who helped make a sign
for my friend, Kristen Milligan. It meant so much to her to know I was
running for her. I wore the sign and one of the ribbons. (I saved a
ribbon for her) Prayers and blessings to you.
All the best,
Lois Hicks-Wozniak

It was a great day and you guys did a great job.Â
Congratulations on so many runners for the race.
Dear Myriam,
I had a great day and really appreciate what you and Kathleen did for
CROC and the community. You are an inspiration to many people, myself
included.
Sincerely,

You both did a terrific job on this event. It
was a great race and a great day. It takes a
lot of work to put on that event and raise the money that you do. You
have a good team. Kathleen we did find the jacket and thanks for
looking.

You ladies put together and run a super event!Â
Nice job. I bet you're glad it's over and you can concentrate on your
marathon. Good luck to you both.

Great race, seemed to be a lot of happy people. Beyond the
help of the wind, conditions were perfect. I really like the
towel, classy touch. Now you can relax and learn how to BREATH
again. Â

Myriam, Â Â You and Kathleen do a real
nice job putting the half together. I like the emails.Steamtown did
that also last year. The Dodge Inn is a great host facility and the
food was the best!!! Thanks  Bill Grennille
Hello! My first 1/2 Marathon - I (was) really looking forward
to it! I did have a good time! thankyou!!!! -Marian Morris
Hi Kathleen and Myriam,
It’s been a great privilege to volunteer for your 2004, 2005
races, and a bit for this years race too. Last year, while on my way to
the Yankee Lake intersection to lend support, it was easy to see the
genuine enthusiasm by the on-course support personnel already in place.
When the last runner past I then headed back up through the course and
was so favorably impressed with the continued on-course support and
even the runners showed their enthusiasm and cheer for the support
volunteers.
This year, I had the opportunity to run the race and was simply blown
away by the tremendous support on the course. The water/Shaklee (I
think) stops were adequate and well placed. Best of all, they were
well-manned by enthusiastic and supportive volunteers. CROC of course,
were well represented and added uniquely to the runners’
experiences. Tom Eanelli and “The Numbers Lady did a
superb job with their renegade “comfort station. Large
full cups of water and energy drinks, gels, engaging conversation (yes,
even during the race!) I got caught up in conversation that I could not
possibly take in the myriad of running products at the table.
Every intersection was well managed by the volunteers not only keeping
runners on track and keeping drivers aware of the race, but they were
very enthusiastic as well! The course was very well marked with the
arrows, mile marker signs, and even the mile award winners. The mile
timers were superb! I noticed that they were mostly manned by very
experienced runners including several race directors. That gave me such
as positive feeling in addition to lending credibility to the race,
knowing that you placed the right people in the right places. I
especially appreciate the mile timer efforts by Rich Hujus, Valerie
Kilcoin, Frank Fivek, and Dave De Costa who each magnificently managed
two separate miles. Suzy Loughlin and Jack (your son) were other mile
timers that I much appreciated. And I want to give a call out to Fast
Finishes for the timing and scoring. Al, Cathy, and Karen Sutcliffe
deftly handle so many unique demands at each race they take on, and
this was no exception with the waves of early starters.
While so many people helped with the race, I just wanted to say thank
you so much for ensuring a top-rate on-course support program.
It’s one of the areas that sets your race apart from the vast
majority of the others! I know you’ll review this
years’ race and see how to modify the event for next year.
Please, keep up your brilliant efforts on the course. I know I am not
alone in truly recognizing the value this provides the runners. A lot
of work? “Yes. Keep doing? “Yes.
Thanks much.

Kathleen & Myriam,
I have to thank you both for the
awesome job you did with the Celebrate Life Half-Marathon.Â
It was very organized, you had outstanding "goodie bags", good food,
and great giveaways (and not just because I won at mile 6), etc, etc.
 You both should be
very proud of yourselves, and I appreciate all of your hard work!

Hi Kathleen and Myriam,
I just want to congratulate you and thank you both for putting on an
outstanding event.   Â
I understand what it entails and have a lot of respect for the task
you've undertaken for the last 3 years. I sometimes say to the
question, "Why do you run and race?", because it feels so good when
it's over. I'm sure that it's a great relief to be unburdened by the
race being behind you. Thank you, again, for your generosity. Take care.

Myriam,
 Just wanted to
thank you again and tell you what a great job that both you and
Kathleen Rifkin did in putting together the half-marathon.Â
As always the race was great and very well organized, a first class
race all the way. I know that the race will continue to
grow as the word of mouth about how good a race is gets
around. Please tell Kathleen that without people like
yourselves the runners would not have these races to run!

Dear Myriam,
Thank you for putting on a wonderful race on Sunday! You and Kathleen,
again, did a fantastic job. You make it look so easy - everything works
so smoothly! I can only imagine the amount of time & planning, hard
work and energy you both have put into this event for it to so quickly
turn into one of the areas' favorite races. An applaud also to all the
volunteers who cheered us on along the way - very supportive and very
enthusiastic! Again, congratulations and thank you.

Thank you (for the second year) for organizing and executing a
wonderful race, and by the healthy numbers of entrants, I hope it will
become part of the running scene in the area. Speaking of
number, I hope the race raised a significant amount of money for CROC.

I think the two of you and everyone that was involved with the
Celebrate Life ½ did a wonderful job. I didn’t do
particularly well myself, but I think I’ll just have to do more
long runs before I try something like that again. I
haven’t planned a ½ marathon in quite a few years
(I planned 2 back in the late 1970’s), but I know how much work
they entail. So, BRAVO and I am interested in how much you were able to

Thanks for the pictures from the finish line! Â They were
great and speaking of great...your race was great! Â Both
you and Kathleen did a terrific job for the runners, the communities
and clubs. Â From the training runs to the on course support
and mile timers and to the post race festivities, it was a top notch
event. Â You guys should feel very proud! Â
I just wanted to tell you how well I
thought your race went. Everything was great - the t-shirts are really
nice (no sponsors on shirt give it such a nicer look - the bags with
the sponsors was a great idea), there was plenty of food and you
certainly provided a lot of nice door prizes (of which I was fortunate
enough to receive one!), the on-course water stops were plentiful and
located at perfect distances, and I love the early start for us slow
pokes!  Are you selling the caps or were they
special orders?
Thank you for all of the work that you
did to put together the Celebrate Life Half Marathon. It
was a great event and I feel honored to be able to compete in
it. You and all the volunteers did a tremendous job and I
hope that you have continued success in the future.
Â
Also, I have a question for
you. I was the one who collected donations
(in memory of my mom who passed away from ovarian cancer in
October 2004)Â for CROC and gave you some checks at
registration time. Well, when I got home I received a few
more checks in the mail. Where would you like me to send
them? Is it okay if they are made payable to either
Celebrate Life Half Marathon or Citizens Reunited to Overcome
Cancer?  I hope that it helps.
